How Much Cooking Oil Does Your Family Actually Need?

Most households buy cooking oil by habit — the same can or bottle, refilled whenever it runs low — rather than by any real sense of how much a family should be using. It turns out there's an actual, government-published answer, and it's more specific than most of us assume.

What ICMR-NIN says

The Indian Council of Medical Research's National Institute of Nutrition (ICMR-NIN) publishes Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) for Indians, last revised in 2020. On cooking oil specifically, the guidance is direct: "The visible fat (cooking oil) must be limited to 20–50g (4 to 10 teaspoons) per person per day, depending on the level of energy (calorie) requirement, which is based on physical activity and physiological status." As a reference point, the guidance adds that no more than 27g of visible fat/cooking oil is recommended for someone on a 2,000 kcal/day diet.

For adults specifically, the 2020 RDA gives sex- and activity-specific numbers: men are guided toward 25g/day (sedentary work), 30g/day (moderate work) or 40g/day (heavy work); women toward 20g, 25g or 30g/day respectively. That's a wider range than the flat "one bottle a month" assumption most kitchens run on.

Why this is easy to get wrong

A family of four isn't four identical adults — it's usually a mix of ages, activity levels and appetites, and the ICMR figures aren't published as one single per-child or per-teen number the way they are for adults. That's the gap our Oil Usage Calculator is built to close: it takes ICMR-NIN's adult figures directly, and estimates reasonable numbers for toddlers, children, teens and seniors by scaling proportionally from the same nutrient-requirement tables — clearly labelled as an estimate, not an official published figure.

Turning grams into a grocery list

Once you know your household's daily total, the rest is arithmetic: multiply by 30 for a monthly figure, divide by oil density (roughly 920g per litre) to get litres, and round up to whole bottles. That's exactly what the calculator does automatically — plug in your family, and it hands you a monthly litre and bottle count instead of a guess.

Try it for your household
